If you are interested in learning more about how to manage your personal finances, the Human Development and Family Studies department on campus offer classes that detail managing your personal finances.
HDFS 183 – Personal Finance in Early Adulthood (1-0) Cr. 1. F.S.
HDFS 183 is a one-credit introduction to managing your money offered both online and in-class. The course covers the student’s perspective on credit, credit cards, debt, financial aid, savings, insurance, and taxes. Introduction to basic concepts and budgeting practices for management of resources and prevention of financial problems commonly associated with college, including credit and student loans. Offered on a satisfactory-fail basis only.
HDFS 283 – Personal and Family Finance (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S.SS.
HDFS 283 is a more thorough exploration of personal financial management covering many of the same topics as 183 but from a family perspective. The course takes a lifespan approach to personal finance beginning with resource management in the early years of employment and moving through topics such as income tax planning, investment planning, retirement planning, risk management, and estate planning. Introduction to basic principles of personal and family finance. Budgeting, record keeping, checking and savings accounts, consumer credit, insurance, investments, and taxes.
